Human Microchipping: Could Tech Injections Be The Future Of Convenience?

PROPHECY WATCH:  It’s sounds like something out of a science fiction movie: inserting microchips under your skin. But it’s not just fiction. The trend is happening, including in San Antonio. Although, the benefits and risks may not be what you expect. Dale Bracey and Drue Placette are co-founders of prototyping facility “CANopener Labs”.

“My background’s more art and design and find things,” says Bracey, “[Drue’s] more of the bulldozer. It brings about balance”. They build anything from holographic drones to flamethrowers. Their workshop is packed to the brim with laser cutters, 3D printers, and two dogs named Torq and Chewy. Bracey and Placette take ideas of their clients and make them a reality. But one of their latest technological adventures isn’t about what they’ve created, but about what they’ve injected into themselves.

Using a hollow fourteen-gauge needle, the pair injected rice grain-sized microchips under their skin. The chips are bought from a company named “Dangerous Things”. Bracey has one inserted in his elbow. Placette has seven in his hands. They use the chips to open doors, start cars, and to pay electronically via Apple or Google Pay. The chips also store data. “They also have ones that have magnets. You can feel magnetic fields. They have ones with LED in them. You can feel them light up under your skin,” says Bracey. As convenient and neat as they may be, the technology also bring up the question of potential risk. Bracey and Placette say the chips are not easy to hack. The chips also act as a “key” of sorts. -Full Report
